Butcher Block

Butcher block countertop in a Washington DC kitchen

Butcher Block

Butcher block is solid hardwood — typically maple, walnut, or oak — milled and joined into a single thick countertop. It's the friendliest surface for daily use: warm to the touch, easy on knife edges, and food-safe when properly finished. A great choice for islands, baking zones, and casual kitchens.

Product Description

Butcher block develops a patina over years of use that most homeowners come to love — small marks become character. We finish butcher block with food-safe mineral oil or a polymerized hardwax oil depending on how you'll use it. Periodic re-oiling (every few months in heavy-use areas) keeps the wood healthy and water-resistant.

Best practices: don't leave standing water, don't set hot pans directly on the surface, and resand-and-refinish every few years to remove deep marks if you want a fresh look. Pairs well with Shaker or inset cabinets in a traditional or farmhouse-leaning kitchen.
